Just Do It - An Invitation from Vito Abate

Dear writers, actors and generally talented folk,

I am writing to tell you about a show series that I am producing with Theatre Charlotte called just do it.

It premieres on Feb 29. If you are on the MTA mailing list you will have received a similar notice–this one has more details…

just do it is a monthly themed reading and performance series making its local premiere-season debut at Theatre Charlotte on Friday, February 29 at 8pm. Its first season will continue with 3 additional Friday evenings over the following 3 months.

Each night has a different theme in the form of a title, word or expression. Writers and other artists present original material based on their take of the theme. The structure and venue provide “inspiration” for actors who write, writers who need deadlines and focus, and performers who just want to perform…

Each evening new works will be presented as well as installments of regular segments, including picture this, where 2-3 writers will compose short pieces based on an original photograph.

All contributors are simply asked to adhere to:

–pre-show deadlines to submit early and final drafts

–time limits

and then show up prior to curtain for a quick tech. There are no restrictions in terms of choice of content or presentation of material. Musicians, singers, actors and performance artists, poets, et al are all welcome to participate. Performances can be on or off book, performed by you or actors.

Most pieces will be no longer than 7-10 minutes in length.

picture this pieces will be 3-5 minutes in length. (ideal for the busy or new writer)

Following each performance will be a chance for performers and audience to mingle informally and discuss the evening’s work. Each night will also include a free raffle. Tickets are (still) $5!!

just do it originated in New York City and ran there for 3 seasons in the early 90’s. It was later revived in Denver, CO in 2001. It was created by Vito Abate & Mike Kraus. Vito will serve as producer with Theatre Charlotte, and host.

The premiere season is as follows:

Friday February 29

The First Time

Friday March 14

The Root of All Evil

Friday April 25

Judgment Night

Friday May 30

Love & Lust

Spaces are limited for each show. Please check your calendar and between that and these titles–let me know if you are interested!

For more information or if you have questions, please email me back here or at : justdoitcharlotte@yahoo.com

Please pass this on to anyone you think might be interested.

Thanks-and hope to hear from you. Don’t hesitate: just do it.

2008 marks two very important events for ASC.  First, we are celebrating our organization’s 50th Anniversary.  Second, we begin implementing a new organizational roadmap initiated by our Board of Directors in 2007.  One of ASC’s key strategic priorities is building long-term sustainability for cultural organizations and creative individuals in Charlotte Mecklenburg by:
