Queen City Theatre Company is excited to announce auditions for the unauthorized comedy that took Broadway by storm and finally allowed Charlie Brown and the gang to grow up, ” Dog Sees God ” by Bert Royal.   The production will be directed by QCTC Artistic Director, Glenn Griffin and performances will take place at Spirit Square - Duke Power Theatre from February 7th through February 23rd, 2008.

The cast:

The cast of “Dog Sees God” consists of 4 woman and 4 men, ages 21-30

Men

CB: (Charlie Brown)   A little more sure of himself…but still a blockhead.

Van:   (Linus)  Always the philosopher in childhood is now a pothead.

Matt :  (Pig Pen)  A pathological neat-freak (he applies a layer of  Purell to his hands whenever he touches anyone) whose dirtiness has been internalized - he’s sex-obsessed and homophobic.

Beethoven :  (Schroeder) He became the school outcast prior to events in the play when it was revealed that he was sexually-abused by his father.

The play:

When CB’s dog dies from rabies, CB begins to question the existence of an afterlife. His best friend is too burnt out to provide any coherent speculation; his sister has gone goth; his ex-girlfriend has recently been institutionalized; and his other friends are too inebriated to give him any sort of solace. But a chance meeting with an artistic kid, the target of this group’s bullying, offers CB a peace of mind and sets in motion a friendship that will push teen angst to the very limits. Drug use, suicide, eating disorders, teen violence, rebellion and sexual identity collide and careen toward an ending that’s both haunting and hopeful.

THE LAST NIGHT OF BALLYHOO

By Alfred Uhry

Nov 6-9; 12-16, 2008 (Wed, Thu at 7:30 pm; Fri, Sat at 8 pm; Sun at 2:30 pm) (9 performances)

Details:  (Comedy/drama) Winner of the Tony Award for Best Play, it takes place in Atlanta, GA.  “Gone With the Wind” is having its world premiere, and Hitler is invading Poland, but Atlanta’s elitist German Jews are much more concerned with who is going to Ballyhoo, the social event of the season.  Especially concerned is the Freitag family:  bachelor Adolph, his widowed sister, Beulah (Boo) Levy, and their also widowed sister-in-law, Reba.  Boo is determined to have her dreamy, unpopular daughter, Lala, attend Ballyhoo, believing it will be Lala’s last chance to find a socially acceptable husband.  Adolph brings his new assistant, Joe Farkas, home for dinner.  Joe is Brooklyn born and bred, and furthermore is of Eastern European heritage—several social rungs below the Freitags, in Beulah’s opinion.  Lala, however, hints broadly about him taking her to Ballyhoo, but he turns her down.  This enrages Boo, and matters get worse when Joe falls for Lala’s cousin, Reba’s daughter, Sunny, who is home from Wellesley for Christmas vacation.  Will Boo succeed in snaring Peachy Weil, a member of one of the finest Jewish families in the South?  Will Sunny and Joe avoid the land mines of prejudice that stand in their way?  The family gets pulled apart and then mended together with plenty of comedy, romance and revelations along the way.
SHAKESPEARE IN HOLLYWOOD

By Ken Ludwig

Jan 29-Feb 1; Feb 4-8, 2009 (same as above) (9 performances)

Details:  (Comedy.)  Lights, Camera, Shakespeare!  It’s 1934 and Shakespeare’s famous fairies Oberon and Puck magically have materialized in Hollywood on the set of Max Reinhardt’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” at Warner Brothers Studio.  Instantly smitten by the glitz and glamour, they are ushered into the world of the silver screen to play (who else?) themselves.  A feisty flower helps lure blonde bombshells, movie moguls and other arrogant show biz folks into loopy love triangles with raucous results.  Mischievous magic sparkles in this hilarious movieland romp by the author of Broadway’s “Crazy for You,” “Lend Me a Tenor,” and “Moon Over Buffalo.”  Winner of the 2004 Helen Hayes Award for Best Play and one of the most-produced plays by US community theatres in the last two years.

DEATH OF A SALESMAN

By Arthur Miller

March 19-22; 25-29, 2009 (same as above) (9 performances)

Details:  (Drama.)This American classic, written by one of America’s greatest playwrights, was the winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award for Best Play.  The story is known worldwide, having to do with the last days of a failing salesman, who seeks to find out, by a tragic series of soul-searching revelations of the past life he has lived with his wife, his sons and his business associates, just where and how he has failed to win success and happiness.  A thrilling work of deep and revealing beauty, that was last presented by Theatre Charlotte in 1999 and went on to become one of  Theatre’s greatest successes.
THE FULL MONTY

Book by Terrence McNally

Music and Lyrics by David Yazbek

April 30-May 3; 6-10; 13-17, 2009 (same as GODSPELL)

Details:  (Musical.) Seeing how much their wives enjoy watching male strippers during their “girls night out,” unemployed steelworkers in Buffalo, NY come up with a bold way to make some quick cash.  In the process, they find renewed self-esteem, the importance of friendship and the ability to have fun.  As the guys work through their fears, self-consciousness and feelings of worthlessness, they come to discover that not only are they stronger as a group, but that the strength they find in each other gives them individual courage to face their demons and overcome them.  This is a musical adaptation of the award-winning movie of the same name.  “There is great heart to THE FULL MONTY, and the ultimate themes expressed in the show are great lessons for everyone.  And the truth be told, through creative directing and staging, the final impact of the show can be achieved without ever losing your shorts”…Music Theatre International.  “Memory grabbing melodies, outlandish lyrics…” Ben Brantley, NY Times.  “It’s a blockbuster!”  Clive Barnes, NY Post.

It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play, by Joe Landry, is a new stage adaptation of the classic movie. North Carolina Stage Company and immediate theatre project (known as itp) present this warm and funny play December 1st and 2nd, in the Duke Power Theater at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. Both companies are based in Asheville, NC, and this production marks their Charlotte debut.

In this clever adaptation, playwright Joe Landry gives new life to the familiar story by setting it in the studios of the fictional WBFR Radio on Christmas Eve, 1946. The five hard-working radio actors of WBFR portray dozens of characters from the movie, switching effortlessly between voices. Underscoring the radio drama are live sound effects, utilizing the old-fashioned techniques of radio shows like The Lone Ranger or The Shadow.

The play stars Asheville actors Lauren Fortuna, Hans Meyer, Willie Repoley (a Charlotte native), Joe Sturgeon, and Kathryn Temple. It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play is directed by Hans Meyer, co-founder of immediate theatre project. Meyer has directed past itp productions The Glass Menagerie (2004) and All My Sons (2006) and is a graduate of Guilford College, where he met itp Producing Director Willie Repoley and Managing Director Lauren Fortuna.

NC Stage was founded in 2001 by husband and wife team Charlie and Angie Flynn-McIver (also a Charlotte native) and is currently in its 6th season at its 99 seat theatre in Downtown Asheville.  www.ncstage.org

A TUNA CHRISTMAS – TEXAS COMEDY RETURNS TO NC

A Tuna Christmas, the Holiday favorite branded by writers Jason William, Joe Sears and Ed Howard as “the Comedy with Tex-Appeal”, returns to North Carolina this season opening at the McGlohon Theatre - Spirit Square on Wednesday November 28th.

Produced by the Carolina Actors Studio Theatre, A Tuna Christmas is set on Christmas Eve somewhere west of the Pecos where all comic hell breaks loose as the delightfully eccentric Tuna Texans cope with seasonal traumas, a disaster prone production of A Christmas Carol, a yard decorating contest being sabotaged by the mysterious “Christmas Phantom,” and the arrival of Aliens from Outer Space!

Arles Struvie and Thurston Wheelis broadcast local merriment and near disaster from hometown Tuna Texas radio station OKKK, introducing 30 zany characters all played by just two actors (and split second costume changes), Tom Olson and Josh Elicker!!!

A hilarious opportunity to spend your holidays in Texas’ third smallest town where the Lion’s Club is too liberal and Patsy Cline never dies; A Tuna Christmas will play November 28th through December 9th, Wednesday – Saturday performances at 8:00PM and Sunday matinees at 3:00PM.

Tickets are $22 for Adults and $20 for Students and Seniors.  Tickets may be purchased online at www.carolinatix.org or by calling the Box office at 704-372-1000.  More information can be found at www.nccast.com.
