About the Classes:

Basic Technique: This class provides a very practical and easily accessible method of working for both beginning and experienced actors. Incorporating today’s best and most modern principles of acting, this distinctive Layering Technique has been developed by the instructor to provide a practical working foundation for the actor, and to serve as a solid framework on which to build more complex work. Here the actor will identify his unique responsibilities to the creative process, study the essential tools of his craft, and learn to properly apply those tools towards the creation of reality on the stage or in front of a camera.

Scene Study: For the more advanced actor, the emphasis of this class is on the practical and creative application of the actor’s technique through a variety of scene work. In this class we will explore the unique skills required to be a truly creative actor. Students will discover how to make strong and interesting choices, and how to unlock the pathways that propel a character into dynamic action. Other topics will also include: script and character analysis, audition techniques, rehearsal methods, and specific performance skills for both period and modern plays. Students must be prepared to spend time outside of class for rehearsal with their scene partners. Instructor’s permission is required for those who have not taken the Basic Technique class.

Review - Goddess and the Magdalene

An epic story from Epic Arts…
By: Xavier G.N.

(Warning: to all who see this show, it starts at 7:30 pm. That being said, I missed the opening- and will not get another chance to see it again- which should invalidate the review altogether… but if you are interested please read on!)

Goddess & the Magdalene
Written and directed by Stan Peal

~Stan Peal begins his “Goddess and the Magdalene” nestled within the bosom of an astonishingly gorgeous set where an American student takes a wrong turn and encounters a woman possessed. Speaking tongues, Amanda Nicastro’s wide-eyed, innocent character imparts a tale of Mary, widow of Jesus. As the tales goes, Mary leaves her people and discovers a trio of enigmatic women: There’s the delightful and genuine Marilyn Carter as Gaia, the strong but distant Annette Saunders as Hilde, and finally- the graceful but softly played Kwan-Yin presented by Carrie Anne Hunt.

As the adventure with the women progresses, Mary’s character builds to a fever pitch allowing Laura Depta’s range of talents to break through for what evolves into a stellar performance. Peter, a role effectively played by the physically dominating Alan Nelson, is a leader obsessed with returning a ’subservient’ Mary to her people. (Of course for the, uh, good of the people…) Utilizing what powers he has, he sends forth Tom Ollis as a tortured and broken Barnabas, among others. This gives rise to one of the more touching ‘male’ scenes in this play of the Goddess. James- played by Chaz Pofahl, who exudes caring from every pore in the scene- asks if there is something going on with his friend (Barnabas) when money has gone missing.

Throughout the ensuing adventure, the relentless chase, and significant character breakthroughs are ensemble dances, chants and swordplay. Throw in giant puppets- and what I can only call the ‘dragon angel’- and what small problems exist (mainly persistent upstaging, some overbearing sound cues and overly dimmed lights) are instantly forgotten. I wanted to see more from the ensemble- more of giants and their puppetry work (with remarkable designs from Drew Nowlin). More of Lou Dalessandro and his amusing Adam. More of the childlike Eve from Amanda Liles and a Lillth so playful and fun that Barbi Van Schaick shines every time she slips into the role. Alas, we will have to live with the gems we have been given.

Myk Chamber’s costuming effectively takes us from the tale to check in on Paul, the American played by Glen Hutchinson. A point that reminds us we are not in 30 A.D. As the story comes full circle, you don’t want to say good bye to the world filled with women heroes- not even as the grace of the fading lines dims with the lights. What does it all add up to? A magnificent spectacle. A must see show. The kind of theatre that I only hope is the precursor of what is to come. From this show I carry away only one regret, (Besides coming late) and that is, that I was not part of this extremely talented team of artists.

Remember the show starts at 7:30 every night at Actor’s Theatre- It continues to run 19-22nd, 26-28th with a 2:30 mat on 7/22. Tickets are 20$. Check out more at www.epicarts.org or call 704-567.9964.

Message Board Coming Back!

I think I’ve found a way to resurrect the Message Board feature while still keeping the porno spam off the boards. The new site is here - but now registrations have to be approved by an admin (currently me) before anyone can post. I won’t ban any real people, but the porn-bots can’t play. If you want to help create an open forum for discussion on our theatre scene, follow the link and sign up!

Shakespeare Carolina Presents Hamlet

For Immediate Release

Contact John Hartness – 704-904-7308

            johnhartness@gmail.com

Shakespeare Carolina presents Hamlet at Theatre Charlotte.

Shakespeare Carolina, York County’s only classically-based theatre company, presents William Shakespeare’s Hamlet July 19-21 and 25 – 28 at Theatre Charlotte, 501 Queens Rd, Charlotte, NC. All shows will take place at 8PM. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for students and seniors citizens. Wednesday July 25 is Pay What You Can Night. Tickets may be reserved via email at shakescar@gmail.com, or via telephone at 803-524-1185.

Hamlet, often referred to as the greatest of Shakespeare’s plays, has been adapted countless times on stage and screen by such actors as Laurence Olivier, Richard Burton, Kenneth Branagh and Kevin Kline. The Shakespeare Carolina production features Nick Asa as Hamlet, Brian Willard as Claudius, Suzy Hart as Gertrude and Karen Surprise as Ophelia. This production is directed by John Hartness, Producing Artistic Director of Shakespeare Carolina, who recently appeared as Petruchio in SC’s production of The Taming of the Shrew.

This production combines old and new, with a stripped-down, minimalist production style of the main Hamlet story combining with a spectacular Kabuki performance of the famed play-within-the-play.  Kabuki direction is by James Cartee, and costumes are by Suzy Hartness. Lighting is by Tresa Cummins and Charles Holmes provides the fight choreography. Anna Montgomerie (stage manager) and Chris O’Neill (sound design) round out the production team.

Hartness, who directed this show once before as Managing Director of the Off-Tryon Theatre Company said, “This is a very different production from my first trip to Denmark. We are concentrating on the words, the language and the truth of the characters rather than any particular concept. My goal is to present a world and a group of people with real, human problems that today’s audience can relate to. There’s a good reason this show has endured for hundreds of years – these are people and issues that everyone can relate to, even if they haven’t had their crown stolen by an incestuous, scheming uncle who murdered their father and married their mother.”
