Auditions for Beau Jest

Auditions for Beau Jest
Davidson Community Players announces auditions for Beau Jest by James Sherman, directed by Carey Kugler, on Monday, May 21 and Tuesday, May 22, 2007 at 7 p.m. Auditions will be held in Room 216 at Davidson College Presbyterian Church, located on the corner of Main Street and Concord Road in Davidson, bordering the campus of Davidson College. Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script; no monologues necessary.

Sarah is a nice Jewish girl with a problem: her parents want her married to a nice Jewish boy. They have never met her boyfriend, a WASP executive named Chris Kringle. She tells them she is dating a Jewish doctor and they insist on meeting him. She plans a dinner party and, over the heated protests of Chris, employs an escort service to send her a Jewish date to be Dr. Steinberg. Instead, they send Bob Schroeder, an aspiring actor who agrees to perform the impersonation. Happily, he is extremely convincing in the role and Sarah’s parents are enraptured. Soon, even Sarah falls for Bob.

Roles for 6 adult actors:

Sarah Goldman, 20’s-30’s
Chris Kringle, her boyfriend
Bob Schroeder, her escort
Joel, her brother
Miriam, her mother
Abe, her father

“A light, sweet romantic comedy.” -Chicago Tribune.
“Sherman wonderfully blends farce with a genuine insight.” -Chicago Sun Times.
“Very funny…. The well crafted play has a lot to say about nuclear families of any ethnic persuasion.” -Wall Street Journal.

Please arrive PROMPTLY at 7 p.m. either night and bring a headshot, photo, or resume if available. Please bring your conflict list to the auditions. Performances of Beau Jest will be July 26, 27, 28 and August 2, 3, 4, 5 in the Duke Family Performance Hall on the campus of Davidson College. Rehearsals are evenings and weekends beginning in early June. For further information call 704.892.7953 or check the website at www.davidsoncommunityplayers.org.

DCP Needs Real Estate

We normally rent shop space at Davidson College but the shop is housed in a building that is undergoing renovation so we must find temporary space for the summer.

Location is important - it needs to be close enough for our volunteer set builders/painters. I have been focusing on Mooresville south to Harris Blvd.

We need the warehouse space to build and paint sets. Electricity is critical. Water to clean up paint brushes is also pretty critical. If there was a faucet outside that would work.

We need between 1,800 and 2,400 square feet of space with either a double door or a roll up door to load the sets out.

Some pieces may be as tall as 16 feet therefore high ceilings are pretty critical. At absolute minimum they should be 13 feet high — ideally 17 or 18 feet would be better.

As to what we have budgeted for rent, we can do between $600 and $800/month which isn’t much, but perhaps the company would be willing to write off the balance as a gift in kind sponsorship. If so, I would need logo etc  for our printed materials very quickly.

We need the space beginning May 1 and ending about July 25 or so. We need to act quickly in order to have the space ready to build in May. Before we can begin even building the Hello Dolly set, we will need to build the workspaces for the tools.

Thanks so much, please call or email if you have a lead or space!

Sincerely,
Cindy Rice

ticket available for Doubt

So far, I have not been able to find someone who is interested in seeing “Doubt” with me on Wednesday so I am willing to sell the tickets at face value……or best offer. The seats are great, in the Center of the Grand Tier Circle and they are two aisle seats in section 108. Great view of the stage.

Once again the face value of the tickets is $47.50 for next Wednesday the 18th at 8pm in the Belk Theatre. If no one is interested in attending the show with me then we can discuss a purchase of both. Just shoot me an email and we’ll begin a conversation.

Also, I will still be viewing “Sweet Charity” so if anyone is interested in that show then I would love to have ya. The info is provided below.  However, as it is a June show, no decisions need to be made now as I’m sure I will be trying again when the time gets near. ;-)

Thanks!!

Liz

The Phoenix Rises - RHCT Opens Steel Magnolias Tonight

Just a couple of months ago, folks from the Rock Hill Community Theatre woke up on a Sunday morning to find themselves homeless, their theatre the victim of a tragic fire. Tonight, the little theatre that could rises from those ashes to present the classic Southern comedy Steel Magnolias.

Look, it’s not a big deal for a community theatre to produce Steel Magnolias. It’s more a big deal for a year to go by without a community theatre producing Steel Magnolias. But this production means a lot more than another group of women laughing and crying over their lather, rinse, repeat. Tonight marks a return to the stage of a company that I personally thought would never manage this production so soon after losing everything they owned.

Everything. All their props, costumes, lights, archives, everything was destroyed in the fire. But tonight the show goes on. It doesn’t matter if it’s any good, but I know Vito (the director) and he’s not gonna let anybody slack, what matters is that it’s being done.

Break a leg, ladies.

Carrie Ann’s Kiss Opens Tonight

Charlotte, NC—Carrie Ann’s Kiss is back! This new comedy by local
playwright and actress Tonya Shuffler is a hilarious comic adventure
that follows the journey of five Carrie Ann Cosmetic Consultants on
their way to the National Convention to compete for the company’s
highest achievement award: the coveted “Ruby Kiss.” Fierce
competition and more than a little back stage conspiracy are normal at
the National Convention, but this year there’s an added intrigue. One
of the finalists threatens to undermine the very foundation of Carrie
Ann Cosmetics, simply by attending. You won’t want to miss the
fireworks when this band of quirky, competitive and compassionate
characters collide.

Carrie Ann’s Kiss is back courtesy of the Blumenthal Performing Arts
Center after a highly acclaimed premiere last year at Theatre
Charlotte. Carrie Ann’s Kiss will be performed at the Booth Playhouse
(130 N. Tryon St., Charlotte) as part of the Center’s ongoing
commitment to nurturing the local creative community and giving
exceptional works an opportunity to be seen by a wider audience.

Preview night is Thursday, April 12. Opening night is Friday, April
13 with shows running through April 28. Shows are at 8 p.m. and there
will be a Sunday matinee on April 22 that begins at 3 p.m.

Tickets range in price from $20 - $35 and are on sale now through the
Blumenthal Performing Arts Center box office. They may be purchased
online at BlumenthalCenter.org or by calling (704) 372-1000.
